Two Sydney teal seats 'smashed together' if Albanese calls an early election

Teal MPs Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender would be forced to run against one another if Anthony Albanese called an election before October.

Independent MP Zali Steggall says Anthony Albanese should hold off on calling an election until the Australian Electoral Commission has completed its redistribution to avoid wasting the time and resources that have already been spent on redrawing electoral boundaries.

Steggall would face the prospect of her seat of Warringah being merged with the electorate of Wentworth, held by fellow ‘teal’ MP Allegra Spender, if the Prime Minister goes to the polls before October.

There has been speculation of an early election since Opposition Leader Peter Dutton claimed the Prime Minister was considering going to the polls in September, although multiple senior Labor sources say this is highly unlikely.

Under the AEC’s draft redistribution, Western Australia would get an additional seat called Bullwinkel while it is abolishing the Labor-held seat of Higgins in Victoria and the teal seat of North Sydney in NSW.
