A significant left-wing union is encouraging its members and supporters to join protests against Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who will visit Australia this week.

The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has declared it strongly opposes Herzog’s visit due to Israel’s war on Palestine and its attacks on civilians. The union published a strongly-worded post on its Facebook account last week and told Capital Brief there will be many out protesting on Monday.

The MUA call comes despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor General Sam Mostyn having invited Herzog to Australia to connect with the Jewish Australian community in the wake of December’s terrorist attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 Jewish lives.

The union’s intervention raises the issue of whether the invitation could backfire on Albanese amid disquiet within the Labor Party membership and news that NSW Police expect 5,000 protesters on Monday.
