US election watch parties return to Canberra for nailbiter presidential clash

US election watch parties are returning to Australia, with the talk in Canberra very much focused on a late surge for Kamala Harris.

Many federal MPs aren't thrilled with parliament's sitting calendar this week. Not only did the House of Representatives and Senate estimates keep many from attending the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, but they will also be distracted from watching the results roll in from the US election.

In 2020, when Joe Biden prevailed over Donald Trump, much of Australia was in lockdown. Now, election watch parties and other events are returning Down Under.

The US embassy in Canberra has traditionally hosted watch parties; however, with federal parliament sitting and a tight race expected, Ambassador Caroline Kennedy will instead host a breakfast gathering for federal MPs, diplomats and other dignitaries.

“Ambassador Caroline Kennedy cordially invites you to attend an Election Breakfast,” the invitation reads.
