WA Labor still using Fatima Payman’s image for donations
Fatima Payman is widely expected to quit Labor, but the party is still using her image for donations.
The Labor Party’s WA branch was still using senator Fatima Payman’s image to attract donations days after she was exiled from the federal caucus.
Payman quit Labor on Thursday afternoon to sit as an independent, after a week of speculation over her future.
The first-term senator breached Labor rules last Tuesday by voting against the government to immediately recognise a Palestinian state, a move which typically leads to expulsion. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese booted her from the caucus indefinitely on Sunday after she conducted an unauthorised interview in which she declared a willingness to do it again.
But even after Payman announced her defection on Thursday, WA Labor’s website still featured a page titled “Fatima Payman Senate Donation” – which displays her image and asks the public to “chip in today”. The page included suggestions for donations up to $150, though donors could go higher. Money donated goes to the Labor Party, not to Payman’s personal campaign.
