The distribution deal represents the first major tie-up involving HBO Max in the Australian market following its launch earlier this year.

Warner Bros Discovery has struck a deal with Amazon that will make its HBO Max streaming service available to Australian users of Prime Video, in a move to significantly ramp up efforts to scale the service in the local market.

The deal represents the first major tie-up involving HBO Max in the Australian market, aside from WBD’s existing relationship with Foxtel, and follows the playbook used by the entertainment giant to launch HBO Max in other key global markets.

Michael Brooks, managing director of WBD in Australia and New Zealand, said the agreement was a “natural” next step for the company, which launched HBO Max in Australia in March.

“In addition to the [direct-to-consumer] service, partnerships play an important role for HBO Max, both in terms of driving awareness of the product and ultimately helping us to reach more consumers faster,” Brooks told Capital Brief.
