'We don't need to panic': How Australia could actually win from Trump's tariffs
New analysis by the Productivity Commission makes a surprising finding on Trump's tariffs, while its concerns about 'forever subsidies' in the PM's Future Made in Australia plan remain.
The Productivity Commission has reached the surprising conclusion that Australia may actually benefit from the Trump administration's planned tariffs on exports to the world's largest economy.
It's also not convinced the federal government has solved one of the major complaints about its flagship Future Made in Australia (FMIA) plan raised over a year ago by chair Danielle Wood.
Alex Robson, deputy chair of the Productivity Commission, told Capital Brief on Monday that it “remains to be seen” whether the federal government would include appropriate off-ramps when providing significant funding to projects under the FMIA plan.
In April 2024, Wood raised concerns about the risks of the government's FMIA plan creating a class of businesses reliant on “forever subsidies” without a clear exit strategy.
