What happens to Australia if Donald Trump returns to the White House?
The prospect of Trump returning to the presidency is dominating discussion in Washington and Canberra.
Meeting members of Congress inside the Capitol Building on Thursday (US time) Anthony Albanese discussed the behaviour of American journalists at his press conference with President Joe Biden the day earlier.
The Australian prime minister explained to them that he has an “orderly conduct policy” in Australia, whereby he chooses who asks the question and the journalists are not allowed to ask follow-ups.
He said that if Australian journalists acted like the Americans, he simply would not answer the question. “The circus began, they just started screaming. It was very strange,” Albanese told the members of Congress.
It is unclear how the American legislators interpreted his remarks. But in a country which was recently ruled by Donald Trump, who described journalists as the “enemy of the people,” “fake news” and “dishonest”, freedom of the press is less of a laughing matter.
