Whitehaven is already 'scoping' out its post-coal future

One of Australia's largest coal miners is already looking at what it might do when fossil fuels finally fade away.

Some day in the distant future, Whitehaven Coal might need to change its name as the miner looks to diversify its business away from the combustible rock.

While a future without coal is still likely decades away, that hasn't stopped the company from actively exploring other commodities with brighter futures.

A spokesperson confirmed to Capital Brief on Wednesday that the company has quietly taken a position in ASX hopeful Brazilian Rare Earths as it looks to gain exposure to the clean energy transition.

"Our modest investment in BRE, together with other announced investments such as Hydrobe, is part of scoping much longer-term potential opportunities for the business as the transition plays out over a number of decades," they said.
