Wong calls for Palestinian recognition roadmap as US and Israel spar over peace deal

Wong's comments are the latest sign of growing distance between the Albanese and Netanyahu governments.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has made her strongest intervention yet on Palestinian statehood, demanding that the UN Security Council outline a timeline for international recognition.

It comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heightened fears of a full-scale regional war by publicly rejecting calls from the US and Australia for a ceasefire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Netanyahu’s position is the latest sign of fraying relationships with Israel’s supporters, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urging him to “listen to the international community”.

Wong’s stance on Palestine has subtly hardened in recent months. She initially argued that recognition should follow a peace deal with Israel, but in April hinted that Australia could recognise Palestine without Israel’s approval.
