The news: The Albanese government has struck a deal with the Greens to pass its social housing bill, offering an extra $1 billion for the fund but refusing to budge on a proposed rent freeze.

The numbers: Returns from the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund will be tapped to help build the 30,000 social and affordable rental homes promised by the federal government. The additional $1 billion will go to National Housing Infrastructure Facility to support support new public and community housing.

The context: The deal ends an impasse on the Albanese government's housing fund bill, which triggered rumblings of a potential double-dissolution election when Greens and Coalition senators teamed up to block it in June. The Greens have walked back demands for a nationwide rent freeze to endorse the package. The bill is expected to pass the Senate later this week.
