ACCC monitors airline pricing as jet fuel costs surge
The news: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is closely monitoring Australian airline companies in relation to escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The context: The conflict has significantly disrupted international air travel, particularly to Europe, due to airspace closures, flight cancellations and route redirection.
ACCC said while the immediate impact has been on international services, airlines and passengers are already impacted by elevated global jet fuel costs.
Reduced long-haul flights from the Middle East has shifted passenger demand to Asian transit hubs, particularly on routes to Europe, placing upward pressure on airfares where capacity is constrained.
The ACCC said airlines can adjust prices in response to demand, but they must not make false or misleading claims about the reasons for any fare increases.
What they said: “While market conditions will ultimately determine the cost of flying, we are closely monitoring price movements, market behaviour and the airlines’ representations to consumers, and will act if there is behaviour that contravenes competition and consumer laws,” ACCC commissioner Anna Brakey said.
