After call will Putin, Trump says Russia and Ukraine to begin ceasefire talks
The news: President Trump said he had an “excellent” two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the two failed to agree on an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine that has been pressed by the Trump administration and European allies.
What they said: In a social media post, Trump said that “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War.”
He also said the Vatican would be “very interested” in hosting the talks, adding: “Let the process begin!”
Putin said a ceasefire “for a certain period of time is possible if appropriate agreements are reached,” and repeated that “the root causes of this crisis” must be addressed, a reference to Ukraine’s independence.
He said Russia “will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum” about a possible peace agreement.
The context: The call followed the first direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials since 2022, which made little progress. Trump has pledged to end the war swiftly but has faced resistance from both sides, with Ukraine calling for an immediate truce and Russia demanding concessions.
European allies, wary of Trump striking a separate deal with Moscow, have pushed for a unified front. Key issues have included territory, NATO ties and military support to Ukraine.
