AGL to start building Liddell battery in 2024
The news: Electricity and gas provider AGL will proceed with its $750 million Liddell battery project in NSW after making a final investment decision on Tuesday.
The context: The 500MW grid scale battery is a major part of the company's efforts to move from coal-fired power plants to cleaner forms of energy.
Work to build the battery will begin early in 2024. The battery is set to start operating in mid-2026.
It is not the first project of this kind for AGL. The business in August turned on the 250MW Torrens Island battery in South Australia and will soon turn on the 50MW Broken Hill battery in NSW.
What they said: "The Liddell battery will be a key component of achieving our interim target of approximately 5GW of new renewables and firming capacity in place by 2030," chief executive Damien Nicks said.
