Air New Zealand outlines new 2030 emissions target
The news: Air New Zealand has outlined a new 2030 emissions reduction guidance to replace the previous target that it withdrew last year.
The numbers: The airline now expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from jet fuel by 20% to 25% by 2030, compared to a 2019 baseline. It also reaffirmed commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
The context: The airline said it was taking practical steps towards net zero emissions and would update the 2030 guidance on an annual basis in its climate statement.
“The reality of decarbonising an industry like aviation is there is uncertainty and many factors we have limited control over, such as the availability of sustainable aviation fuel at reasonable price. Many of our assumptions are evolving rapidly,” Chief Sustainability Officer Kiri Hannifin said.
In July 2024, Air New Zealand became the first airline to ditch its 2030 emissions target following an earnings downgrade. It had withdrawn its science based emissions reductions target, which required a 28.9% reduction by 2030, from a 2019 baseline. At the time, it cited challenges faced in fleet renewal and fuel availability.
