Air New Zealand signs on for Western Sydney Airport flights
The news: Air New Zealand has become the fourth carrier to sign on to operate flights through Western Sydney International Airport, which are expected to start from mid-2027.
The numbers: Shares in Air New Zealand had risen 0.9% to $0.55 at 1:13pm AEST.
The context: The other carriers that have so far agreed to operate from Western Sydney International Airport are Singapore Airline, Qantas and Jetstar (domestic).
Air New Zealand will benefit from a $16 million Take-Off Fund set aside by Destination NSW. The airport is seeking to incentivise more carriers to join by offering passenger subsidies and marketing support.
The amount of funding that Air New Zealand receives will depend on how many flights and passengers it flies in the first three years of operations.
The 24-hour airport is set to open in late 2026, with the aim of facilitating an annual passenger volume of 10 million by 2033.
Major construction works across Western Sydney International Airport are complete, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visiting the site earlier today for an unveiling ceremony.
What they said: “Western Sydney International Airport is getting ready for take-off. This is the first new route secured through the Minns Labor Government’s Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund, and a route that I am sure will no doubt be very popular,” NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said.
