The news: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce a $4 million feasibility study into building Australia’s first new oil refinery in six decades, according to media reports.
Albanese and Western Australian Premier Roger Cook will unveil the plan on Tuesday as part of broader energy security reforms, ABC News and the Australian Financial Review reported.
The context: Australia has just two operating refineries and has not built a new one since the 1960s. Six have closed over the past two decades amid competition from Asian refineries.
If the study finds the project is feasible, fertiliser manufacturer Perdaman would build the refinery at a yet-to-be-determined site in Western Australia.
What they said: In a statement cited by ABC News, Albanese said the war in the Middle East would continue to affect Australia and that his government would do everything possible to limit the fallout.
