The news: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a ministerial reshuffle in which he chose to give ministers Amanda Rishworth, Katy Gallagher and Anne Ally additional responsibilities while promoting Aged Care Minister Anika Wells to cabinet.

The context: The reshuffle was needed following the retirement of Government Services and National Disability Insurance Scheme and Minister Bill Shorten who has taken up the role of vice chancellor with the University of Canberra.

Albanese announced on Thursday morning that Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth will have the NDIS added to her list of responsibilities, while Finance Minister Katy Gallagher will be responsible for Government Services.

Minister for Early Childhood Education Anne Aly will be given the additional responsibility of Minister Assisting the Minister for the NDIS.

Minister for Aged Care and Sport Anika Wells will be promoted to cabinet, filling Shorten’s spot.

The ministers will be sworn in at Government House by Governor-General Sam Mostyn on Monday morning.

The minimal reshuffle comes weeks before Albanese calls an election, due to be held by 17 May.

Speculation within Labor is that Albanese is eyeing an election for 5 April or 12 April.

What they said: "This term Bill Shorten has put people with disability back at the centre of the NDIS, as he committed to do," Albanese said.

"And set the scheme importantly on a sustainable footing. Cleaning up some of the mess that he inherited in cracking down on those taking advantage of people with disability, but also having a lend of taxpayers.

"I will continue this work, as will the new ministers I am announcing today."
