Albanese announces new cabinet
The news: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled his new ministry, with senior figures Tanya Plibersek, Michelle Rowland, Murray Watt and Amanda Rishworth all given new roles.
The context: It was previously confirmed that Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, Trade Minister Don Farrell, Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong would retain their positions.
Industry Minister Ed Husic and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus were controversially dropped from their positions following internal caucus votes among the two major factions last week.
Albanese today announced Communications Minister Michelle Rowland will replace Dreyfus as attorney-general, while Tim Ayres will be promoted to cabinet to replace Husic as industry and science minister.
Albanese's rival Tanya Plibersek will be moved from the environment portfolio to social services, Murray Watt will take over as environment minister, Amanda Rishworth will replace Watt in industrial relations, and Anika Wells will become the communications minister.
Anne Aly will be promoted to cabinet and appointed minister for small business, international development and multicultural affairs.
Victorian MP Daniel Mulino has been elevated to the ministry, replacing Stephen Jones as assistant treasurer and minister for financial services.
Health Minister Mark Butler will take on the additional responsibilities of ageing, disability and the NDIS, while Sam Rae will take the outer-ministry of aged care and seniors.
Andrew Charlton will be appointed cabinet secretary and assistant minister for science, technology and the digital economy.
The Liberal Party will vote on a new leader on Tuesday, with Sussan Ley, Angus Taylor and Tim Wilson now expected to make a tilt at the position.
The Nationals will hold their leadership ballot at 3pm today between current leader David Littleproud and challenger Matt Canavan.
What they said: "We have the largest ALP caucus in history, since federation. A caucus brimming with capacity, talent and energy in both the House of Representatives and the Senate," Albanese said.
