Albanese not ruling out more fuel excise extensions amid fresh US-Iran tensions
The news: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has not ruled out further cost of living relief, such as additional extensions to the fuel excise cut, amid fresh US-Iran tensions.
Speaking to Sky News on Sunday morning, Albanese responded to questions about additional excise extensions by saying he is focused on “providing certainty” in a “volatile world”. He said that if there is a “massive global shock again” the government will respond.
The context: On Saturday evening, Albanese announced the government is extending the fuel excise into July but at a reduced rate following a deal between the US and Iran.
But his latest comments follow fresh concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran claiming it would close the strait following Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
“We only had the peace deal between the United States and Iran announced in the last week,” Albanese said on Sky News.
On Sunday morning AEST, Trump said on Truth Social there would be “NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60 day period has expired, unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America should the deal not be completed, for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East for purposes of both past, present, and future reimbursement of costs”.
Talks between the US and Iran are set to take place in Switzerland on Sunday.
