Aldi is Australia's cheapest supermarket, report finds
The news: A government-funded study of Australian supermarkets has again found Aldi the nation’s cheapest provider, as Coles and Woolworths face a probe into alleged price gouging.
The context: It is the second quarterly report delivered by CHOICE, Australia’s leading consumer advocacy group, since the government commissioned it to research the supermarket sector.
CHOICE visited 104 stores across Australia — including Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, and IGA — to compile its results, which found for the second time running that the German supermarket chain was the cheapest.
This week, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese released the government’s draft mandatory code for the industry, with significant fines for supermarkets in breach.
His announcement coincided with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announcing it was suing Coles and Woolworths for allegedly misleading shoppers with fake discounts on hundreds of common products.
CHOICE’s next report is due in December.
The numbers: The report found an average basket without specials from Aldi was $50.79, cheaper than Woolworths ($68.70), Coles ($69.91) and IGA ($78.95).
What they said: “We are doing everything we can to ensure Australians are paying a fair price at the checkout and Australian farmers are getting a fair price for their goods,” Albanese said.
