Amazon confirms cuts to 14,000 corporate staff roles
The news: Amazon said it is cutting around 14,000 employees as it launches a major restructuring.
The context: The tech giant’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, Beth Galetti said that the positions will be cut from across the corporate workforce in a blog post published on Tuesday.
“The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers’ current and future needs”, Galetti said.
Earlier on Tuesday media reports began circulating about speculated job cuts, with Reuters reporting that as many as 30,000 corporate jobs could be on the chopping block. That figure would represent around 10% of the company’s 350,000 corporate workers.
In June, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy flagged that job cuts were on the horizon as the company increases its use of AI to automate work.
The numbers: Amazon employed 1.55 million people globally as of 30 June and is scheduled to report earnings for the quarter that ended 30 September on Thursday.
