The news: Amazon told staff on Wednesday that hundreds of workers will be dismissed across its Prime Video and MGM Studios divisions.

The numbers: Amazon previously announced cuts in 2022 and 2023 amounting to over 27,000 workers. The company currently employees approximately 1.5 million employees globally.

The context: A company email seen by Bloomberg explained that Amazon will continue investing in high-impact content while cutting back or discontinuing other areas.

The memo, written by Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon’s video and studio division reads: “We’ve identified opportunities to reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas while increasing our investment and focus on content and product initiatives that deliver the most impact."

Earlier this week, Amazon announced it would dismiss 35% of staff at its livestreaming service Twitch, around 500 employees.
