Amazon reportedly in talks to invest USD10b in OpenAI
The news: Amazon is in talks to invest USD10 billion ($15 billion) or more in OpenAI, valuing the ChatGPT maker at more than USD500 billion, The Information reported.
The numbers: OpenAI announced last month that it would spend USD38 billion renting servers from Amazon's cloud computing subsidiary Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next seven years.
The context: The new funding would help OpenAI pay for commitments it has made to rent servers from at least five cloud providers, including AWS, that it uses to develop its AI models.
Amazon and OpenAI have also discussed commerce partnership opportunities, according to The Information's report, which cited three people familiar with the talks.
The discussions reportedly started around October after OpenAI completed its corporate restructuring, which converted its equity to traditional stock, allowing the company to eventually go public.
