The news: Amazon’s first renewable energy project in Queensland — a solar farm owned and operated by Vena Energy, has started operating.

The numbers: The 125 megawatts Wandoan solar farm in Woleebee, Queensland consists of over 250,000 solar photovoltaic panels, which will generate enough renewable energy to power more than 60,000 Australian households each year.

The context: Amazon will be the main long-term energy off-taker for the Wandoan project, keeping the e-commerce giant on track to power all its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. The solar farm is part of the Wandoan South Project which has approval for 650 MW solar and 450 MW battery storage that will provide in excess of 1,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy, annually, to the Western Downs Region.
