The news: Andy Burnham was elected leader of the UK Labour Party and pledged to be a pro-business Prime Minister in an acceptance speech.
The former mayor of Manchester also promised to stop party infighting and redistribute power from Westminster to regional authorities.
The context: Burnham won a Parliamentary by-election in Makerfield earlier this month, prompting Keir Starmer to resign ahead of an expected leadership challenge.
Burnham was unopposed in his bid to replace Starmer and will be officially appointed Prime Minister on Monday, becoming the country’s seventh leader in just ten years.
What he said: “And make no mistake, everybody, I will be a pro-business leader of the Labour Party, as I was a pro-business mayor of Greater Manchester,” he said in a speech.
