Anthony Albanese to travel to Brunei and Malaysia to discuss energy supply
The news: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong will travel to Brunei and Malaysia this week in a bid to ensure the two-way trade of energy supplies, fertiliser and critical goods.
Albanese will undertake the travel between 14 and 17 April.
The numbers: Brunei Darussalam supplies 9% of Australia’s diesel imports and 11% of fertiliser-grade urea imports, while Australia supplies food and agricultural products. Albanese and Wong will meet with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah while in Brunei, with a statement from the Prime Minister’s office noting the two will discuss “energy, food security, and the flow of essential goods”.
Malaysia is the third largest source of refined fuel for Australia and supplies 10% of fertiliser-grade urea imports. While in Malaysia, Albanese and Wong will meet with Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim “to discuss the supply of fuel and other critical goods”.
What they said: “Engaging with critical regional partners such as Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia will help ensure Australia’s energy supply remains secure during times of uncertainty,” Albanese said in a statement.
“We are taking every step to reinforce relationships and engage with key partners to keep our fuel supply flowing”.
Wong said that energy security in the region is a “shared challenge”.
