The news: Claude AI developer Anthropic has appointed Theo Hourmouzis as general manager for Australia and New Zealand as it officially opens its office in Sydney this week.

The context: Prior to the appointment, Hourmouzis was a senior vice president for Snowflake’s Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN divisions helping organisations across financial services, retail, aviation and government move AI from experimentation to business impact. He has over 20 years of leadership experience in the technology sector across Asia Pacific, Anthropic said.

The appointment follows comments from an Anthropic spokesperson to Capital Brief last month, noting the company’s plans to recruit a Sydney-based team.

Anthropic also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the federal government to support AI workers, startups and small businesses. This partnership aims to build skills and help the government harness the benefits of AI quickly, while promoting safety, supply chain security and research and development.

What they said: “Organisations across Australia and New Zealand are thinking carefully about how to adopt AI, and they want partners who take safety and rigour as seriously as they take the opportunity,” Hourmouzis said.

“That’s what drew me to Anthropic. I’ve spent my career working with businesses and governments across this region, and the organisations that do best with AI will be the ones that pair ambition with discipline,” he added.
