The news: Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, is experiencing services disruptions with thousands of users reporting issues with accessing the platform’s services.

The context: At 1:37pm UTC (12:37am AEDT Tuesday), the company said that some API methods are not currently working and it is investigating, having previously said that the Claude API was working as intended an hour prior.

It had earlier added that the issues being seen were related to Claude.ai and the company’s coding service Claude Code. “The issues we are seeing are related to Claude.ai and with the login/logout paths”, it continued.

The outage comes after the company has seen a surge in new users and increased visibility after a highly-publicised spat with the US Department of War (DoW).

US defence officials had called for unrestricted use of Anthropic’s AI tools for military services, but the company has rejected the request as it doesn’t want its products used to spy on US citizens or to develop weapons that fire without human involvement. After Anthropic refused to agree to the Pentagon’s terms late last week, US President Donald Trump ordered all US agencies to stop using the platform. Anthropic said it intended to challenge the decision in court.
