Apple announces AI strategy, ChatGPT integration
The news: Apple has unveiled its new "Apple Intelligence" technology for iPhone, iPad and Mac, which will integrate artificial intelligence into its latest operating system, and utilise its partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to its products.
The numbers: Apple shares closed 1.91% lower at USD193.12 ($292.18) on the Nasdaq, and were down 0.22% in after hours trading by 8:39am AEST.
Last week the iPhone maker was replaced as the world's second most valuable company by Nvidia, having struggled in recent months due to weak demand for its iPhones and rising competition in China, the world's biggest smartphone market.
The context: Apple announced the new offering at its Worldwide Developers Conference, alongside the launch of the company's latest operating system iOS 18.
Apple's partnership with Microsoft-backed OpenAI will see new features rolled out across its products, including AI tools for summarising text, editing pictures and organising content.
Apple said the ChatGPT integration would be available free to users later this year, with other AI features to follow.
The company has also revamped its voice assistant Siri with generative AI technology, giving it the ability to control individual app features, including deleting emails and editing pictures for iPhone users.
Apple said it plans to use its own chips to help power AI features on its devices, and announced its "Private Cloud Compute", which will run more complex requests and extend the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud.
What they said: Apple CEO Tim Cook said: "Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users".
"Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence," he said. "And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them."
