The news: The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced it is advancing the rollout of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for more accessible and affordable charging for Australians nationwide.

The project is supported under ARENA's 'driving the nation' program in a step towards decarbonising Australian transport.

The numbers: ARENA has invested $21 million into this project. It aims to allocate $18 million to operate battery electric vehicle charging stations nationwide, $2.3 million to deploy EV chargers in rural and regional NSW and $1.089 million to establish a national vehicle-grid network.

The context: ARENA's key strategic priority is decarbonising transport, as it is responsible for 20% of Australia's carbon emission, it said.

What they said: “The transport sector is on track to become Australia’s largest source of emissions by 2030, and these projects demonstrate the rate of progress being made in driving down these emissions, as well as the breadth of solutions required to do the job,” ARENA CEO Darren Miller said.
