ASX set to fall as Wall Street indices start year lower
The news: The Australian sharemarket is poised to open lower after all three major Wall Street indices fell during their first trading session of the new year.

- Wall Street: Dow Jones down 0.36%, S&P 500 down 0.22%, Nasdaq down 0.16%
- Europe: FTSE 100 up 1.07%, CAC 40 up 0.18%, DAX down 0.58%
- Spot gold: up 1.29% to USD2,658.43 per ounce
- Oil prices: Brent down 0.07% to USD75.88/barrel, US WTI up 1.95% to USD73.12/bbl
- AUD: up 0.2% to 62.02 US cents
- Bitcoin: up 2.39% to USD97,037.63
The context: After choppy trading on Wall Street, all three major indices edged lower. Tesla shares tumbled 6.1% after Elon Musk's car maker reported its first drop in annual deliveries in years.
The S&P and the Nasdaq have now recorded their longest losing streaks since April, having ended the last five sessions in the red.
What to watch: New US unemployment claims and ISM manufacturing purchasing managers index data is due to be released on Saturday morning AEDT.
