ASX to open higher after mixed Wall Street session

The news: The Australian sharemarket is set to open higher following a mixed session on Wall Street as investors brace for Nvidia earnings later this week.

  • ASX futures: up 12 points or 0.14% at 8,348 points
  • Wall Street: Dow Jones down 0.16%, S&P 500 up 0.4%, Nasdaq up 0.64%
  • Europe: FTSE 100 up 0.57%, CAC 40 up 0.12%, DAX down 0.11%
  • Spot gold: up 1.84% to USD2,610.51 per ounce
  • Oil prices: Brent up 0.1% USD73.37/barrel, US WTI up 3.3% to USD69.23/bbl
  • AUD: up 0.7% at 65.06 US cents
  • Bitcoin: up 1.71% to USD90,673.50

The context: The Nasdaq led gains across Wall Street's three main indices overnight, boosted by a surge by Tesla after reports that US president-elect Donald Trump’s transition team plan to make a federal framework for self-driving vehicles one of the Transportation Department’s priorities. Traders are also waiting on Nvidia's third-quarter earnings, due on Wednesday, after the chipmaker led the market's tech rally this year.

What to Watch: Earnings reports from TechnologyOne and ALS; annual general meetings for Omni Bridgeway, Monadelphous, BlueScope Steel, Sonic Healthcare and Seek; and the release of the Reserve Bank's latest meeting minutes at 11:30am AEDT.
