The news: Software giant Atlassian has appointed Google's vice president of product Anil Sabharwal to its board of directors, effective 1 February.

The context: Sabharwal has held various senior leadership roles during 17 years at Google, including founding the strategy, product, design and engineering teams behind Google Photos.

He also led product, design and engineering for Google Chrome, ChromeOS and Chromium and was on the founding team that built Google Drive, Mobile Docs and Google Keep.

Sabharwal most recently led the health and wearables division within Google’s Pixel team, formerly Fitbit, and is also a venture partner at VC firm AirTree Ventures.

Last year, he served as a technical adviser to Atlassian, overseeing its new partnership with the Atlassian Williams Racing Formula One team.

Atlassian also confirmed that Rich Wong and Sasan Goodarzi have retired from the board of directors after serving 15.5 years and 7.5 years respectively.

What they said: “Anil builds products people can’t live without,” said Atlassian CEO and co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes.

“He’s spent his career helping ambitious companies scale responsibly, and he knows how to make products smarter, more helpful, and more human with AI. That’s exactly the perspective we want at Atlassian.”
