AUKUS announce AI plans to counter China in the Pacific
The news: Defence ministers from the US, UK and Australia have announced plans to use artificial intelligence technology to counter China’s military presence across the Pacific.
The context: The technology will use AI algorithms to process sonar data collected by underwater devices, allowing the allied countries to accurately and rapidly track Chinese Naval vessels, including submarines. The plans fall under AUKUS Pillar II, the technology sharing agreement signed by the three nations.
The leaders also announced plans to expand private sector engagement through an ‘Aukus Defense Investors Network’, launch a series of ‘Innovation Prize Challenges’ for military challenges, and to convene an ongoing industry forum to help inform policy, technical and commercial frameworks around naval capabilities.
The news comes as The Philippines accused 135 Chinese vessels of swarming a reef off its coast in the South China Sea on Sunday.
What was said: “These joint advances will allow for timely high-volume data analysis, improving our anti-submarine warfare capabilities,” said the ministers in a joint statement.
