Australia-China Investment Working Group recommences after nearly a decade
The news: The Australia-China officials-level Investment Working Group has recommenced nearly 10 years after its last meeting.
The news was welcomed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers and China’s National Development and Reform Commission chair Zheng Shanjie following the fifth Australia-China Strategic Economic Dialogue.
The context: In a statement after the meeting, Chalmers said the recommencement of the working group “gives us a forum to discuss investment trends and policies in both countries and advance Australia’s national interest”.
The Investment Working Group was last held in February 2016 in Beijing.
The two countries are also progressing work on finding commonalities and complement in sustainable finance taxonomies to help investors “compare and assess green investment opportunities across jurisdictions" and to facilitate cross-border green capital flows when consistent with the national interest.
Chalmers was also briefed on China’s 15th Five Year Plan during the strategic economic dialogue. It was the first economic dialogue held in back to back years.
What they said: “Last year, the Strategic Economic Dialogue resumed after seven years. It is an important forum for promoting pragmatic economic cooperation between Australia and China,” Chalmers said.
“Australia continues to work towards a stable and constructive relationship with China, which is in the interests of both countries.
“Today’s dialogue shows that we are well on the path to do just that and we’re looking forward to the next one in 2026.”
