The news: Twenty-five countries including Australia, the UK, France, Canada and Japan have issued a joint statement saying “the war in Gaza must end now”, condemning “the drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, seeking to meet their most basic needs of water and food”.

Citing figures from Gaza’s Health Ministry and the UN, the statement described the deaths of over 800 Palestinians seeking aid as “horrifying”, and called Israel’s aid delivery model “dangerous” and “unacceptable”.

The countries said they are prepared to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political pathway to peace.

The statement was not signed by the US or Germany.

The context: The joint condemnation came as the World Food Programme accused Israeli forces of firing on starving Palestinians gathered around a food convoy, and as Israeli forces launched their first ground assault in Deir al-Balah, where tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians are sheltering.

The UN said nearly 88% of Gaza is now under evacuation orders or military zones, leaving 2.1 million civilians in 12% of the territory.
