Australia to send ADF official to join US-led Gaza taskforce
The news: Australia will send an official from the Defence Force to participate in the US-led coordination centre efforts to manage humanitarian efforts in Gaza under the Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC).
The context: A statement released by the Defence Force explains that Australia “intends to be as constructive as we can as a member of the international community.”
The ABC understands that the official will contribute to the planning and coordination efforts being led by the CMCC, which was established as a key pillar of the 20-point peace plan for Gaza brokered by US President Donald Trump.
“This peace plan brings a rare and important moment of hope after more than two years of immense suffering and devastation,” the statement said.
The US has invited partner nations to participate in the CMCC, with Australia agreeing to “provide a Liaison Officer to the CMCC from the Australian Defence Force.”
“Australia’s contribution of a Liaison Officer to the CMCC in Israel is in line with our commitment to support international efforts towards a just and enduring peace,” Defence said.
The statement said that while “Australia’s strategic priority remains the Indo-Pacific region, we will always carefully consider opportunities to contribute to international peace and security.”
