Australian household wealth tops $18.8 trillion: ABS
The news: Australian household wealth increased by 2.5%, or $453.7 billion, in the December 2025 quarter, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The context: Total accumulation of household wealth reached $18.84 trillion, driven by solid income growth outpacing spending rates, which led to an increase in household savings. Ongoing contributions toward superannuation balances also supported further growth in employment income.
The value of residential land and dwellings saw a 3.2% uptick, or a $368.6 billion increase. In addition, the federal government’s 5% Deposit Scheme and Government Help to Buy Scheme were expanded during the period.
The ABS also found the total demand for credit was $142.4 billion, with household credit demand rising higher than the previous quarter due to a significant growth in housing loan balances.
At a macro level, national investment increased by $20.6 billion, to $192.4 billion, in the December quarter.
What they said: “Rising house prices continue to be the main driver of growth in household wealth in the December quarter,” ABS head of finance statistics Mish Tan said.
“The mean price of residential dwellings was up 2.7% in the December quarter 2025, with strong growth seen in Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia,” she added.
