Australian job ads slip 0.2% in June as retail, hospitality drag: ANZ-Indeed
The news: The ANZ-Indeed job advertisements fell 0.2% month-on-month in June, following a revised 2% rise in May.
The context: While job ads were broadly steady in June, ANZ economist Aaron Luke said it still represents a 0.5% year-on-year increase. However, both the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ job vacancies and the ANZ-Indeed series remain 28% below their late-2022 peaks, though well above pre-pandemic levels.
April employment data was revised down to a 40,700 decline, leaving employment flat over the past two months, while monthly hours worked lodged its largest drop since June 2025, sliding 1.1% month-on-month.
Luke expects the economy to slow due to a higher interest rate environment, housing market headwinds and geopolitical uncertainty. He anticipates that labour demand will gradually ease, which could cause job ads to trend lower and the unemployment rate edging higher.
Elsewhere, Indeed senior economist Callam Pickering said retail, food preparation and management occupations subtracted the most from job ads growth in June, offsetting stronger demand for nursing and real estate professionals. He added that logistics-related roles have stabilised, though driver opportunities continue to fall.
