The news: AustralianSuper has internally appointed Mike Backeberg to the newly created role of chief platform officer and will be responsible for the superannuation fund’s technology, data and AI strategies.

The context: Backeberg has been acting chief operating officer and was previously chief technology officer.

Backeberg said the super fund spent $165 million during the last financial year on major technology and security upgrades and more development is earmarked.

The $400 billion super fund will be looking to develop a generative AI decision making platform in 2026, improve authentication, strengthen identity verification and invest in technologies to “stay ahead of emerging risks”.

What they said: “Better technology and the careful use of AI will help make our popular app and web portal easier to use. This will give members more control over their super and save them time,” Backeberg said.

He said the business is "responding to growing cyber threats with vigilance and innovation, enhancing existing measures and embedding AI in multiple layers of our security stack".

AustralianSuper chief executive Paul Schroder said: “In a world of AI and machine learning, making the very best connections between talent and tech will be a differentiator for the fund”.
