AustralianSuper appoints Shaun Manuell as chief investment officer
The news: Australia’s largest superannuation fund AustralianSuper has appointed Shaun Manuell as its next chief investment officer, effective 1 July 2026.
The context: Manuell has been on AustralianSuper’s investment team since 2013 and has spent nearly six years as head of Australian equities. Senior portfolio managers Luke Smith and Andrew Smith will jointly lead the Australian equities team on an interim basis before a permanent replacement if found.
Before joining AustralianSuper Manuell was chief investment officer at Equity Trustees.
AustralianSuper announced that incumbent CIO Mark Delaney would step down on 30 June 2026 in December 2025.
The super fund has more than $410 billion under management, which puts it in the top 40 largest asset owners globally. The fund is 60% internally managed and has more than 400 in-house investment professionals globally.
AustralianSuper also said its Australian equities portfolio has delivered 2.6% per annum outperformance since 2013 when compared to ASX benchmarks.
What they said: “Shaun has proven himself as an outstanding investor at scale over the long term and a great leader. He has a deep commitment to delivering for members who put their trust in us to grow and protect their retirement savings,” AustralianSuper chief executive Paul Schroder said.
“Having worked closely with the directors of Australia’s largest companies over many years, Shaun is known for his considered approach to representing the interests of members in Australia and globally.”
