Barrenjoey expands into Hong Kong
The news: Barrenjoey has opened its second offshore office in Hong Kong and will offer Australian and New Zealand equities sales, trading and research.
The context: The company said the new office would position its equities team closer to its Asian client base. Alongside the expansion, Barrenjoey has also acquired Forsyth Barr’s Asia business, which is based in Hong Kong.
Forsyth is a New Zealand-headquartered financial services firm that formed a strategic alliance with Barrenjoey in August 2022.
The expansion into Hong Kong follows the investment bank’s entrance into Abu Dhabi in June 2024.
Barrenjoey launched in September 2022 under investment from Magellan Financial Group and Barclays.
What they said: Barrenjoey head of equities Chris Williams said: “Hong Kong is a key global financial centre and our presence ensures proximity to our clients in the region, underlining our commitment to this important market”.
Barrenjoey equities chief operating officer Klaudia Szargawinska said: “Acquiring Forsyth Barr’s existing operations in Hong Kong enabled us to accelerate our presence in Hong Kong, and we’re grateful for the collaboration with Forsyth Barr”.
