The news: BHP has appointed former BlueScope Steel chief executive Mark Vassella as a non-executive director, effective 1 June.
The context: Vassella served as BlueScope’s CEO from 2018 to January 2026, overseeing global operations across Australia, New Zealand, North America and Asia.
What they said: “Mark has extensive experience in the global steel industry,” said BHP chair Ross McEwan.
“Mark brings a strong focus on global resource development, values-based leadership and relationships with people and community.”
