The news: BHP president Australia Geraldine Slattery has joined the board of the Business Council of Australia as representatives from Rio Tinto and Woodside step down after departing the companies.

The context: Former Rio Tinto chief executive Australia Kelie Parker and former Woodside and current BP CEO Meg O’Neill have stepped down from the board of the business representative group.

BCA president Geoff Culbert said Parker “has been a tremendous voice for growth and the role of the resources sector in supporting communities across the country” while O’Neill has provided “exceptionally valuable international perspectives on Australian policy debates”.

Slattery leads BHP’s Australian operations and previously headed up BHP’s global petroleum business. Overall, she has spent nearly 25 years at the mining giant across its UK, US and Australian operations.

She joins eight other members on the board of the Business Council including Commonwealth Bank chief executive officer and managing director Matt Comyn, Wesfarmers managing director and chief executive officer Rob Scott and Google Australia and New Zealand managing director and vice president Mel Silva.

What they said: “Geraldine’s operational leadership across geographies and commodities brings vital insight to the BCA as we focus on future investment, global competitiveness, and shared prosperity,” Culbert said.
