The news: BHP has announced major changes to its executive leadership team ahead of newly appointed chief executive Brandon Craig officially taking the helm on 1 July.

The context: The changes include splitting the Americas division into two distinct roles, president North America and president South America, to allow for greater operational focus across both regions.

BHP has appointed Jessica Farrell as North America president, effective 1 July, while current chief operating officer Edgar Basto will transition to the newly created role of chief enterprise performance officer, effective 1 September.

Farrell will also serve as interim president South America until a permanent successor is appointed.

Geraldine Slattery will continue in her role as president Australia and will also assume responsibility for the company’s South Australian copper business.

What they said: “I am confident that the new appointments will support BHP’s progress in strategy, operating performance, growth and our differentiated approach to social value creation — all in support of strong long-term shareholder returns,” Craig said.
