The news: BHP has shaken up some of its top management positions with a number of internal appointments.

Chief commercial officer Vandita Pant will take the role of chief financial officer from 1 March 2024, replacing David Lamont. Lamont will remain with the company as a senior executive officer until February 2025.

Rag Udd will shift from President America's to chief commercial officer. Udd's role will be filled by Brandon Craig, currently BHP's iron ore asset president for Western Australia.

Chief development officer Johan van Jaarsveld will replace outgoing chief technical officer Laura Tyler, who leaves BHP at the end of February.

The context: BHP's performance in the recent financial year was weighed down by lower commodity prices, delayed shipments and sluggish economic growth. BHP boss Mike Henry has said iron ore demand has remained robust in India and China despite the global slowdown. The price of the raw steel material has been recovering in the second half of 2023, and has lifted by roughly a third since hitting annual lows in May to around USD132 per tonne.

What they said: "These new appointments ensure that we continue to build organisational capacity, with the right mix of skills, experience and perspectives to deliver BHP’s strategy and pursue our growth agenda," BHP CEO Mike Henry said in a statement.
