The news: Australia's largest steelmaker BlueScope has announced the retirement of long-standing non-executive director Ewen Crouch and the appointment of US-based Cheri Phyfer to the company board.

The context: Crouch, who joined the board in 2013, will retire following the company's annual general meeting in November.

Phyfer, who will join on 1 October, has served as a C-suite executive at building products companies Fortune Brands Innovations and Sherwin-Williams.

BlueScope also announced the appointment of long-time senior legal counsel Yasmine Gardner as company secretary, effective from 19 August.

What they said: "Having held non-executive directorships with three overseas entities in recent years, Ms Phyfer brings experience in public and private enterprises and I'm sure will be a strong contribution to the BlueScope Board," said chair Jane McAloon.

"We look forward to all that Cheri can bring to BlueScope, particularly as we progress our ambitious growth plans in North America."
