Booking.com customers warned hackers may have accessed reservation data
The news: Accommodation reservation giant Booking.com suffered a data breach, exposing customer details including names, contact information and reservation details to in a recent hack.
The context: In an email sent to certain affected customers on Sunday night, Booking.com said it recently noticed suspicious activity affecting a number of bookings and took immediate action to contain the issues.
The company said: “Information accessed could include “booking details, names, emails, addresses, phone numbers, and anything that you may have shared with the property”.
Booking.com noted that reservation PIN numbers had been changed to keep reservations secures, but warned customers to install antivirus software and not to share any credit card details by email, over the phone, through text messages or WhatsApp.
The Dutch company, which lists over 30 million accommodation venues globally, did not disclose the number of customers affected by the hack, but added that financial information was not accessed.
