Calix receives $45 million for green steel demonstration plant

The news: Calix has received a $44.9 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to help fund development of its green steel demonstration plant.
The numbers: When operational, the plant will produce 30,000 tonnes of direct reduced iron, which can be fed into an electric furnace to produce green steel.
The context: The ASX-listed minerals processor will use its Zero Emissions Steel Technology to refine iron ore without the use of coal and therefore emitted CO2.
ARENA previously funded the company's front end engineering design study, which determined that the zero-emission iron refining technique was scalable and cost-effective.
The process uses a combination of hydrogen reduction and electric heating to refine the iron ore and can be achieved using multiple different types of iron ore, including hematite and magnetite. Other direct reduction technologies are only capable of processing magnetite iron ore and can't use hematite, which the majority of Australian iron ore mines extract.
