The news: Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has announced that the construction and general division of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) has been placed under administration for up to five years.

The context: Dreyfus, who said the decision was "in the public interest", has determined a scheme for the administration, and general manager of the Fair Work Commission Murray Furlong has appointed barrister Mark Irving as administrator.

The scheme, which covers the CFMEU and all of its branches — including in WA and ACT — will take place immediately.

Furlong noted that he intends to work with Irving in an "open and transparent way" to ensure the CFMEU’s Construction and General Division can operate effectively into the future.

The administration follows a series of revelations in the Nine newspapers relating to alleged criminal infiltration of the CFMEU.
